yesterday, I've worked on the bike for 4 hours, finnishing at 0:00.
Did a lot to it, but we didn't get much done.
It started with the new ignition, turned out that the bolts to mount it where to thick and treads in the holes of the engine were worn out. We've put in some helicoils, drilled out the holes in the base-plate of the ignition en started to bolt it in. then we discovered that the heads of the new bolts where to thick.. so we had to look for others.
putting the cylinder back on was a piece of cake (but only after we took the generator out).
Then the primary... I ordered a adjusting kit, double adjustable, but now we found out that the gearbox is equipped for a single adjustable kit..
We put the pulley's and belt on anyway (will install the adjusting kit later) but when we tried to fasten the front pulley, suddenly all the treads of the nut ran away.. and I didn't had the right nut at hand...
Well, better luck tonight I hope!

DieCo's Panhead Day two

I test fitted my 'secret cable-to-hydrolic system' today.
I don't give a damn about 'period correctness' or 'true old school' or whatever.. I just want a cool bike that looks old, but is up to today's traffic. And especially here in Belgium.. traffic is crazy!
So.. I want a front disc brake. I was looking for some nice clean master-cylinder for it, but couldn't find anything.
What I did find was a Kustom-Tech cable-to-hydrolic system. I'm going to put it behind the fork cover, that way, I have a clean handlebar, but still a disc brake.

Also started drilling holes to mount the gastank. That wasn't an easy job, the frame has about a ton of filler on it and that causes the drill to go anywhere but where it has to go..
Tomorrow I'll be welding a little tube into the hole to strengthen it and then the gastank is fitted :-)

Linkert Carburetor Horror story part 2

So.. More about that Linkert.
Even though it seems hopeless, I want to give it a try, maybe there is some future for it after all!

I've put the carburetor in some diesel. Only after 1 day I already saw some difference.
I disassembled it and put it back into the diesel, I'm going to leave it like that for a few days.

DieCo's Panhead Day two

Did some work on the panhead today with a buddy of mine.
I started with taking the oiltank out, test-fitting some handlebars. Then we took off the primary, I'm going to change it into a 1-1/2" beltdrive. I ordered a new ignition (with the automatic advance) so I took out the old one (witch you have to adjust manually). In order to do so, I had to take off the front cylinder. well, that was a nice surprise for me! turns out that there are new Wiseco pistons fitted into new cylinders (std size).

Linkert Carburetor Horror story

This is the Linkert Carburetor that the previous owner of the Panhead had:
Watch out, this is not for sensitive vieuwers!

DieCo's Panhead Day one

a few days ago I teased you a bit with those photo's, but now I can officially say that I'm the owner of a 1950 Hydra Glide.
I picked it up earlier this evening and couldn't resist to start tearing it apart.

and 4 hours later:

This way it all looks optimistic, but this is just a 'loose' mock up to see what it will become.
There still is a lot to do! the guy I bought it from had it for about 10 years, when he bought it it was in running condition and completely '70 style. He then started to bring it back to (more or less) it's original looks, but that stopped 7 years ago. Since then the bike was standing in a shack underneath a plastic cover.

When I kick it, it feels like there's good compression so.. not sure if I would open up the engine and do a good inspection, or just try to get it running... We'll see..

The frame needs some work to I think, it looks okay in most places but in other... not so much!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting this beauty on the road!
